WHAT'S A SYNVOCATION? An invocation invokes Spirit. A Synvocation is meant to do the same, but the word better matches our teaching. Either or both of us (Preston & Emily) give talks with a Spiritual lesson - called Synvocations - at some of our events (ie: Synthesis, Synphoria, The Synphorium). These talks are Possibility seeds planted in the heart-mind, to nurture, grow, and help reveal one's already Authentic Self. Emily's Synvocations are generally improvised on a theme, but every week Preston writes one and reads it aloud @ Synthesis Tuesdays. The following is a recent Synvocation. THE ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME Synvocation by Preston Klik for August 5th & 12th, 2008 (includes parts 1 and 2) They are called "singularities", these unique unparalleled events. Each of them only happened one time, and everything was profoundly different afterward. The singularities I speak of are the four times when the universe made improbable and unforeseeable radical transitions from one paradigm to another. Things were one way, and then, rather suddenly, they were powerfully and radically another way. Let me tell you a bit about the first three. And then we'll concentrate more on the fourth one. You and I could not possibly exist without the first three singularities. But... there's even more to the fourth one. For you and I are alive in - and AS - the fourth singularity. === I don't know how you talk about nothing, when you REALLY mean nothing, nothing at all. As far as we can tell, in the beginning there was nothing. But not nothing as in "Here's a space and there is nothing in it" for that is still something - a space - filled with nothing. It also doesn't work to say "There was nothing for along time", for time is something. How does one conceive of and speak of nothing? One doesn't, at least not successfully. For nothing, REAL nothing, is far beyond our capacities to imagine. We can only imagine something, or the absence of something, which still isn't REAL nothing. From nothing - and much less than our concept of nothing - came something. Now when I say something, I mean EVERYTHING. But I can not really say "everything" with accuracy yet because from nothing came only something, and that early something looks and tastes NOTHING like the EVERYTHING it became billions of years later. We could not possibly RECOGNIZE that first something-that-came-from-nothing if we saw it. It would be so completely alien and utterly foreign to us. Furthermore, we could not possibly SEE that first something-that-came-from-nothing, for our human presence would be so completely alien and utterly foreign to that something-that-came-from-nothing as to be unintelligible and utterly unfathomable. We, humans, have our time and our place. Our time and place is not at the beginning. We do not belong there. But in our search for meaning, we seek to understand WHERE we came from. Hoping the "Where" will provide a "Why". The laws of the universe were encoded in that first something-that-came-from-nothing. That is to say, the rules of the game were there from the start. I mis-spoke, using the word "there". The rules of the game were HERE from the start. I mis-spoke again, using past-tense. The rules of the game ARE here, and always were, from the very beginning. === Still, the point to get from the first singularity is that everything-that-was-and-is-and-will-be was and is available, but hidden or buried inside that something-that-came-from-nothing. Everything-that-was-and-is-and-will-be was there, at the beginning, as probability, or as possibility. In the middle of "nothing" a huge explosion took place. And like magic, out of that nothing, sub-atomic particles and atoms appeared. And cosmic processes were set in motion. After cooling down, the something-that-came-from-nothing took the form of matter, billions and billions of years ago. I mis-spoke, I said the huge explosion took place. But the huge explosion is not over. The huge explosion is STILL taking place, quite literally, for the universe is still expanding. And in more ways than one. We ARE the big bang. It is not just that the physical universe is still growing and expanding, it is that other newly-revealed aspects of the universe are expanding and blossoming, right now. Physics is the first singularity, the first of four sacred miracles. You know how to imagine matter exploding into space, literally creating more space, and therefore time. You can imagine it in your mind's eye as a pinpoint center, called "nothing", and then it explodes outwardly, ever-expanding into space. All that matter was there at the beginning, waiting for the proper time and circumstance to be revealed. Now consider this. Consciousness was there at the very beginning too, waiting for the proper time and circumstance to be revealed. Imagine a second wave, an explosion of consciousness, revealing itself also in space and time. You can imagine consciousness as a pinpoint center, and then see it explode outward, ever-expanding into space, burying itself deeply within matter, yearning... for billions of years... to break free. Consider this, too. You and I... were there at the beginning too, together, waiting for the proper time and circumstance in order to be revealed. That time... that circumstance... is NOW. But I'm getting ahead of myself. ===(((pause)))=== Like I said, for nothing to become physics and matter is a HUGE leap, a singularity, or as I call it : a sacred miracle. It is by definition an improbable and unforeseeable transition from one paradigm to another. Things were one way, and then, quite suddenly, another. Matter itself gave birth to the second singularity : life. Of course matter did NOT give birth to life, for giving birth is a metaphor that can only apply to LIFE. Only life can give birth to life. An yet... there was no life... and then there was. Thus the second singularity, the second sacred miracle, is biology, or life. An improbable and unforeseeable radical transition from one paradigm to an unfathomable other. From dead matter... to living beings. Things were one way, and then, rather suddenly, quite another. Dead... matter... coming alive. Dead matter... eating and SEEING... Dead matter swimming and walking. Perception and sensation grew into awareness and experience. This is the second huge leap, the second singularity, the second sacred miracle. === The third singularity is the human mind. It is the revelation of the interior dimension of the universe, facilitated only by the human mind. Humans have a self-reflective nature. It is sometimes called the "experience OF experience". The third sacred miracle is therefore the human being, the ability for the universe to finally turn in on itself and go deep within, rather than just expanding outwardly. Mind is by definition an improbable and unforeseeable transition from one paradigm to another. Things were one way : matter and life expanding outward. And then, quite suddenly, another : turning inward to the formerly unknown and utterly unexplored interior dimensions of the universe. Mind... mind is the third singularity, the third sacred miracle. It has been said : Life... turns matter... into consciousness. === Let me put this whole thing another way... The third miracle is the something called YOU or ME - or US - turning around, the US looking backwards, forwards... the US looking up, down, all around... And saying... What? What exactly does one say? What exactly does one say... when one finds one's self at the very farthest and cutting edge of the Big Bang? When one looks back fourteen billion years and counting to see a certain kind of origin, a birth out of nothing? What exactly does one say... when one finds one's self a member of the species with the highest embodiment of consciousness ever? What exactly does one say... when one finds one's self at the very pinnacle of fourteen billion years of evolution of consciousness? When one finds one's self in this special, remarkable time, the 21st century? When one finds one's self located on a small blue planet, which planet is held spinning by unseen forces in a dark and infinitely humongous space? What exactly does one say... when one has the unique ability - among ALL the elements and ALL the creatures of the known universe - when one has the unique ability to sit back and examine all that was, and reflect on all that is, and anticipate all that will be? What does one say... when one discovers that we have the astounding ability to use language? To reason, to use mathematics, to create culture? To build bridges, to ride bicycles, to fall in love? To make music, to brew beer, to surf the web? What does one say upon realizing one HAS a deep and tantalizing interior to match one's exterior? What does one say upon realizing one IS not so much defined by one's exterior... as by one's deep, rich, complex and tantalizing INTERIOR? What exactly does one say... in such a situation? For that is the situation we, you and I, find ourselves in. Something one might say, if one was so inclined, and after one pick's one's jaw up off the floor, one might say... "Thank you." Thank you... to whomever or whatever made this adventure possible. This is, quite literally, the adventure of a lifetime. ===(((pause)))=== Look here's the thing. Either the universe and life and consciousness is an accident. Or it is purposeful. Materialists believe the former. I believe the latter. I don't know if this is the capital-T truth or not. Why the universe started cannot be "proved" either way. That we are the fruit of the universe lights me up. There is purpose to life, and therefore meaning to life. We have things to do, futures to become. In fact, the future is ours to create. The fate of the world is in our hands. Some of us will choke when we step up to the plate. Others of us will hit a single, Still others a home run. The future depends on us. That us I refer to includes YOU. What you do will make a difference. What kind of difference - I don't know. But I can help you out a bit with some advice. If you see this world as the miracle it is, if you experience it as an amazing Mystery of the Highest Order, then your life will take on a blissful energy. You've heard me talk about the sacred cycle before : As your sacred Gratitude ascends, sacred Grace descends. So something you might say, if you were so inclined, and after you were deeply struck by the profound Mystery you are alive AS, you might say a simple... "Thank you." It is ready for you as soon as you are ready for it. You are the vehicle of evolution for consciousness Itself. You are the medium through which the evolution of consciousness takes place. You are human, and humans are the most conscious creatures we know. You are the peak, the apex, the current pinnacle of consciousness. And consciousness is the peak, the apex, the pinnacle of the universe's creative expression. The universe is not about matter, it is about consciousness. More than that, the universe is NOT matter, it IS consciousness. If you consider the Big Bang a gestation, then it is easy to see that the whole universe is an expansion of consciousness toward ever-more consciousness. Toward you, and me. Many people have the direction mixed up. They think that matter produced consciousness. But I think that matter was only NECESSARY for consciousness to manifest, to express. Consciousness demanded that there be matter, or else consciousness could... not... BE, could not EXIST. Consciousness wanted a vehicle, a medium. So it created one. If you go for the matter first theory, it's like claiming that a tomato plant randomly ended up with a tomato at the end of its vine. NO WAY! The whole PURPOSE of the plant is to produce a ripe, red, tomato. The plant is merely at the SERVICE of the end product, the tomato. Just so, the purpose of the universe is to produce a human being. A RIPE human being, one who has evolved to personal fruition. The purpose of the universe is to produce YOU, and me. And our purpose is to grow to fruition. Matter serves consciousness, not vice versa. === Try this on... The Upanishads liken the manifest universe to a tree. Not your ordinary tree, but an INVERTED tree... a tree with its roots above, and its branches below. Ultimate consciousness, or Essence, - typically thought of as above - is our Source. Like all roots, these roots in the Heavens give us our spiritual sustenance. These roots above are in touch with pure Spirit. And these roots gather into the trunk which reaches down into this world via its branches, descending into time-and-space... producing, ultimately, matter and the worlds and all living beings. You and I, we are the fruit. And within us are the seeds... of the future. The inverted Tree of Life, roots above, branches below, carrying ripening fruit. It is a powerful symbol. Remember it. ===(((pause)))=== Back to the question. What exactly does one say... when one finds one's self a member of the species with the highest embodiment of consciousness ever? What exactly does one say... when one finds one's self at the very pinnacle of fourteen billion years of evolution of consciousness? When one finds one's self in this special, remarkable time, the 21st century? When one finds one's self located on a small blue planet, which planet is held spinning by unseen forces in a dark and infinitely humongous space? Out of that solely-human "experience OF experience" comes the most complex of all questions... EVER asked by any creature, by any dead matter or ANY living being. The question is... "Why?". "Why?". We are homo sapiens sapiens, the one who knows he knows. So the "experience OF experience" leads to one question... "Why?". Isn't the question "Why?" wrapped up in the idea of time? Which is to say : The idea that we have a limited amount of it - time, that is. Which is to say : Isn't the question "Why?" wrapped up in the idea of our own mortality? Which is to say : We are indeed experiencing time. We are not experiencing the Eternal, moment by moment. Though we all INTUIT The Eternal, and we know The Eternal "IS"... But The Eternal is rarely fully present to us, for we are in and OF time as long as we wear these skinsuits. And that is as it should be, for that is Reality... the Reality of being here, in this place, with a body, at this time. We... are... here. We are wearing skinsuits of various kinds. And, of course, we have to turn them in... when we are done with them. When our times is up. When IS our time up? It is said : "No man... knows the hour." But with that self-reflective question "Why?", the fourth singularity begins to be revealed to us. The fourth singularity is who we are alive as right now... as a process, as a deeper awakening, as a blossoming. For billions of years, matter expanded into the universe. For billions more, abundant life grew on the surface of this planet. Only very recently did the colonization of the interior of the human mind begin. Through all these steps, hidden away at first, consciousness was revealed, consciousness evolved. And now, as we enter this 21st century, the fourth singularity, the fourth unexpected miracle : consciousness... transforms... into Spirit. Spirit, which once was sensed as outside of us, separated from us, Spirit is now revealing Itself to us... AS us. We are growing up. The consciousness we are awakening to is identical to the consciousness of this universe. Where we once asked God for his help, the tables are turning and the Divine now needs OUR help. As our consciousness grows, the Divine begins to know Itself... through us. Who else has the ears to hear? Who else has the lips to give words to? Who else has the heart to Love? Who else has the mind to understand? Who else can willingly choose the Sacred? Who else can choose to evolve? Who else has the awareness of Gratitude? Only humans. We are here to grow, to mature, to evolve, to participate fully. Even more, we are awakening so that we might consciously take on and direct our own evolution, and the evolution of the planet itself. We are coming on-line, as it were, to create the future. Is there any doubt in your heart-mind that we humans now have a profound say in who we become? Both as individuals and as High Stewards of this most-rare planet? The universe has never seen anything like us! And it sees itself, for the first time, through our eyes. Do you remember the iconic photo the astronauts took of our beautiful blue and white marble, hanging in the blackness of space? It was - and IS - the only sign of life for millions and billions of miles. That picture is the earth seeing itself... for the first time. We are the eyes. We are the ears. We are the mind. We are the living, breathing HEART of the universe. As we become ever greater beings, more is given to us. That is the nature of this place, and of its spiritual lessons. We awaken into consciousness ever more during our lifetimes, becoming more and more fully our True Selves. Becoming what we are ultimately capable of being. We are emissaries... for the Divine Itself. We know the world first through our senses, then through our minds, then as Spirit. The Divine knows the world in the same manner : first through our senses, then through our minds, then Spirit becomes us as we align and surrender. We are the conscious sense organs of The Divine. But we are also becoming the great heart-mind, the first great heart-mind made MANIFEST in the universe. The price of our greatness... is responsibility. ===(((pause)))=== Look here's the thing. Either the universe and life and consciousness is an accident. Or it is purposeful. Materialists believe the former. I believe the latter. I don't know if this is the capital-T truth or not. Why the universe started cannot be "proved" either way. That we are the fruit of the universe lights me up. There is purpose to life, and therefore meaning to life. We have things to do, futures to become. In fact, the future is ours to create. The fate of the world is in our hands. As far as we know, the fate of LIFE ITSELF is in our hands. It is possible that life on other planets in other galaxies got as advanced as we have, but didn't make it through this transition. Just like we might not. For the truth is... Some of us will choke when we step up to the plate. Others of us will hit a single, Still others a home run. We need more home run to save this world, to save life itself. === The future depends on us. That us I refer to includes YOU. You can add wonder and gratitude to the world. You can add heartache and misery. Or you can be neutral, in the end, disappearing without a trace. What you do WILL make a difference. What kind of difference - I don't know. But I can help you out a bit with some advice. If you see this world as the miracle it is, if you experience it as an amazing Mystery of the Highest Order, then your life will take on a blissful energy. That blissful energy will transform your life and touch those around you. You've heard me talk about the sacred cycle before : As your sacred Gratitude ascends, sacred Grace descends. So what might you might say, if you were so inclined, and after you were deeply struck by the profound Mystery you are alive AS? You might say a simple... "Thank you. Thank you... to whomever or whatever made this adventure possible." After all, this is, quite literally, the adventure... of a lifetime. May you leave with stretchmarks on your mind.
